Description
In this so-called "strange" festival, a hand-made lantern, "Toro", reaching 4m tall, is hung from the ceiling in the middle of the Yakushi-do Shrine. Men gather below it at 20:00 and start the Shongaina Dance. At a certain point, the Toro is dropped upon the men, and they tear it up in the dark and scramble for the pieces.
